Homemade Broth for Cats
Most cats go a little wild for a spoonful of warm broth. It's also one of the simplest things you can make for them: plain chicken or white fish, water and a bit of time. No salt, no onion, no garlic, nothing you can't name.
Below is every broth recipe in our collection, from a basic chicken broth to soups you can spoon over dinner and little jelly treats that set in the fridge. Each one starts with a short ingredient list, so you always know exactly what's in the bowl.
How to make plain chicken broth for cats
- Put plain, boneless chicken (breast or thigh, skin removed) in a pot and cover it with water.
- Bring it to a gentle simmer and cook for 30 to 40 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through.
- Leave out salt, onion, garlic, chives, seasoning and store-bought stock.
- Strain the broth, let it cool, and skim off any fat that rises to the top.
- Keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze it in an ice cube tray for single servings.
Save the cooked chicken too. Shredded into small pieces, it makes an easy topper on its own.
Common questions
Is store-bought chicken broth OK for cats?
Many store-bought broths contain salt, onion or garlic, which are best kept away from cats. If you buy one, read the label for a broth made without them. Making it at home lets you skip all three.
How much broth can I give my cat?
A spoonful or two over food, or one or two frozen cubes, is plenty. Treats and toppers should stay around 10% of your cat's daily calories.
How do I make jelly for cats?
Warm homemade chicken or fish broth, stir in a little unflavored gelatin, and chill it until it sets. Cut it into small cubes. The jelly recipes below walk through it step by step.
How long does homemade cat broth keep?
Up to 3 days in the fridge and about 2 months in the freezer. An ice cube tray makes it easy to thaw one serving at a time.
